Huainan: a Scenic City with Captivating Cultures of Ancient China

淮南市位于安徽省中北部，地处江淮分水岭，中国南北地理分界线，素有“中州咽喉、江南屏障”。总面积5533平方公里，常住人口302.7万人，城镇化率达62%。是中国能源之都、华东工业粮仓、国家园林城市、中国成语典故之城等，有着“楚风汉韵、山水之城”的独特魅力。
Huainan City, lying in the north-central part of Anhui province, stands at the watershed between the Changjiang and Huaihe rivers and along the geographical boundary between the north and the south of China, honored as “the throat in the middle of China and the protective screen for the south of the Changjiang River” all the time. Our city covers a total area of 5,533 square kilometers, with a permanent population of 3.027 million and an urbanization rate of 62 percent. She boasts an energy capital of China and an industrial granary of East China, designated as a national garden city and the city of Chinese idioms and allusions, with unique charm of “the scenic city with rich historical heritage from the State Chu and the Han Dynasty”.
淮南是一座山水和谐共生的生态之城。“屏舜耕而衔两山, 襟淮水而带三湖”。舜耕山，因舜帝耕耘于此而得名，环境优美。八公山，国家4A级旅游景区，相传淮南王刘安曾在此修仙炼丹论道，集名气、灵气、文气于一身。八公山也是地质科考的宝地，这里发现的“淮南虫”化石，是迄今为止发现最早的古生物化石。上窑山，国家森林公园，景色各异。淮河、江淮运河在这里交汇，千里淮河流经淮南105公里，将八公山、舜耕山、上窑山、焦岗湖、瓦埠湖、高塘湖相串联，形成“三山鼎立、三水环绕”的格局，尽显城市生态之美。
Huainan is a city provided with the excellent ecological environment, displaying harmonious beauty of mountains, rivers and lakes. “The City, shielded by Shungeng Mountain, is linking two other mountains like a bar bit; cloaked by the Huaihe River, is girded by three lakes like three belts.” Shungeng Mountain, named after the mythological Emperor Shun’s cultivation (geng in Chinese) here, is graceful and beautiful. Bagong Mountain, a national 4A-level tourism scenic area, is said that Liu An, King of Huainan, used to practice alchemy and Taoist rituals for immortality, thus winning historical fame, spiritual energy and scholarly aroma. It is also a treasure trove for geological researches, where “Huainan Worm” is the earliest paleontological fossil discovered so far. Shangyao Mountain is certified as a national forest park for its diverse scenery. Through the city meander both the Jianghuai Canal and the Huaihe River. The Huaihe River, about 1,000 kilometers long, runs here for 105 kilometers, connecting three big mountains and three major lakes, i.e., Jiaogang Lake, Wabu Lake and Gaotang Lake. The landscape of “three towering mountains and three surrounding lakes” showcases to its fullest the ecological beauty of Huainan.
淮南是一座彰显“楚风汉韵”的文化之城。“千载八公山下，尚断崖草木，遥拥峥嵘”。千百年来，悠悠淮水见证了淮南的历史变迁。夏商之际，淮夷人在此立国，创造了淮夷文明。春秋战国为蔡楚之地，寿县古城曾为楚国最后的都城。安丰塘古称芍陂，是我国古代四大水利工程之一。寿州窑遗址，原产寿州黄釉瓷，被陆羽《茶经》列为唐代制瓷名窑之列。楚大鼎、鄂君启节、战国青铜车马等精美文物，皆为国内外所罕见。“淝水之战” 古战场，留下了“投鞭断流”“风声鹤唳”“草木皆兵”等历史典故。花鼓灯舞蹈欢快喜庆，寿州大鼓曲韵悠长，抬阁肘阁新奇惊险，寿州锣鼓热情奔放。
Huainan is a city teeming with classical traditional cultures, inherited especially from the State Chu and the Han Dynasty. “More than a thousand years later, under Bagong Mountain grows similar grass and trees, clustering around its treacherous peaks”. Over ten hundreds of years, the ever-flowing Huaihe has witnessed the historical changes of the city. Here, the Huaiyi people established their own state and created the Huaiyi Civilization in both the Xia and Shang dynasties. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, here was part of the Cai State and later the Chu State, and the ancient city of Shouxian was the final capital of the Chu State. Anfeng Reservoir, named Quebei in the ancient times, was one of the four major water conservancy projects in ancient China. Shouzhou Kiln with ruins here, used to make Shouzhou yellow-glazed porcelain, and was accredited as one of the famous kilns for the porcelain production of the Tang Dynasty in the Classic of Tea by Lu Yu. The Chu State’s Great Cauldron, the Bronze Passes for Ejun Qi , the Bronze Chariots and Horses of the Warring States are all exquisite cultural relics not to be found elsewhere. Here broke out the Feishui Battle in the Eastern Jin Dynasty and thus left behind such historical allusions as “Throwing all the horsewhips enough to stop current”, “the whistling wind and crying cranes being like chasing enemies” and “Treating all the grass and trees as enemy soldiers”. The Huagudeng (flower-drum dance) is festal and festive; the Shouzhou Dagu (big-drum opera) sounds mellifluous and melodious; the Taige and Zhouge (lifting-pavilion and elbowing-pavilion acrobatics), strange and thrilling; the Shouzhou Luogu (gongs and drums), exuberant and exciting.
淮南是一座积淀农耕文明的智慧之城。“春雨惊春清谷天，夏满芒夏暑相连。”斗转星移中古人依时耕织、适时休息，时令、天象、物候等逐渐积淀成廿四节气，最早由千古奇书《淮南子》完整记录。《淮南子》，又名《淮南鸿烈》，为西汉淮南王刘安及其门客所著，是一部百科全书式的学术巨著，被称为“牢笼天地、博极古今”。廿四节气不仅是自然的节律，更是农耕文明传承的历史印记，被联合国教科文组织评选列入“人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录”，彰显了淮南特有的地域文化魅力，也体现了中国人独特的时间智慧。
Huainan is a city with great wisdom, giving birth to the farming civilization. “After Spring Commences and Spring Showers, Insects Waken announces Spring Equinox, Pure Brightness and Grain Rain. Behind Summer Commences and Corn Forms, Corn on Ear declares Summer Solstice, Moderate Heat and Great Heat.” As the stars moved and the time passed, the ancients plowed and weaved at the right seasons and rested at the right time, and on the basis of seasons, celestial and phenological phenomena, they gradually but successfully conceived the twenty-four Solar Terms, which for the first time were fully recorded in the legendary classic Huainan Zi, also titled Huainan Honglie, an encyclopedia-style scholarly masterpiece compiled by Liu An together with his followers and reputed “to embrace all of the universe from the ancient to his times”. These solar terms can indicate not only Nature’s rhythms for seasons changing, but also the historical marks of the farming civilization inheritance. They have been included in “the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” by the UNESCO, highlighting both the unique regional culture charm of Huainan and Chinese wisdom of time.
淮南是一座须用舌尖“丈量”的美食之城。“莫道豆腐平常菜，大厨烹成席上珍。”淮南是豆腐的发源地，“豆腐之法，始于汉淮南王刘安”。八公山豆腐清淡中藏着鲜美，品尝时清爽生津，享有“八公山豆腐甲天下”之美誉。淮南牛肉汤号称江淮第一汤，是中华名小吃，“南北奔波数千里，未进淮南闻汤香。”可谓是一碗汤，一座城，一生执念！寿县大救驾、焦岗湖螃蟹、瓦埠湖银鱼、上窑馓子、夏集面圆等特色美食令人流连忘返、回味无穷。
Huainan is a city with abundant appetizing food, “measured” surely with your taste buds. As the poem goes, “Tofu is common food, but can be cooked into chief delicacies”. The city is the birthplace of tofu, for “its invention method was originally found by Liu An, King of Huainan in the Han Dynasty”. Tofu from Bagong Mountain is fresh and delicious with a mouth-watering taste, thus enjoying the reputation of “Tofu from Bagong Mountain, second to none in the world”. Huainan Beef Soup, renowned as the top soup of Jianghuai (Anhui), has been certified as one of China’s Famous Special Snacks. “The soup smells well first to welcome you back home, no matter how far you have traveled away from Huainan”. The beef soup, standing for the city, is the lifelong obsession of all Huainaners! The city is also proud of other local delicacies, enjoyable and unforgettable, such as Dajiujia (fried pastry) of Shouxian County, hairy crabs of Jiaogang Lake, whitebaits of Wabu Lake, Sanzi (crispy bundles) of Shangyao Town, Mianyuan (glutinous meatballs) of Xiaji Town.

Huainan is a city with enormous potential, offering increasing opportunities to entrepreneurs. “Thousands of sails race with rising wind, myriads of oars striving to break through rolling waves.” The city’s surprising growth has been facilitated by high-speed railways, expressways, an airport and waterways. The vigorous advance of emerging industry clusters tells the story of the city’s transformation with great strength; innovation-driven strategies, manufacturing-upgrade projects and the integration of wind-solar-thermal-battery-hydrogen hybrid power are on the municipal government’s agenda. The city is taking full advantage of such major national strategies as the Integrated Development of the Yangtze River Delta and the Urban Integration of Hefei and Huainan, to vigorously promote its emerging industries with a first-class business environment, to accelerate its high-quality leapfrog development, and to promote its comprehensive energy construction as a national new-type pilot. In all, Huainan is striving to write a new chapter in constructing a modern and beautiful city.
